Soil pH and shade

Hey, it’s Brett Jackson with Heartland Turf and Landscape, we get a lot of questions, a lot of requests rather in the springtime to see people’s lawns. And we highly recommend that you wait till fall to do that for various reasons. grassy just will do a whole lot better if you can wait till fall. However, if your yard is in need of seating, there are some things that you can do. Starting now to make sure you get really good results. When the fall time comes. So two, the most common problems that we see, when it comes to having thin yards and needing to see the lawn is going to be shade and soil pH. And quite honestly, a lot of those go, a lot of the yards that have one of those problems, a lot of times has the other one as well, because a lot our older growth trees will be in the older lawns and the longer that a lawn is actually established, the more the soil, the topsoil can become acidic. So things that you can do right now to make sure you get some really good results. In the fall time, seeding is to trim up any trees if you need to, if you’ve got a lot of shade, I’m in a yard here, it has lots of old-growth trees. But these have all been trimmed up very well. And the lawn is doing great. So trim up any kind of trees that you might need to have that are creating a whole bunch of shade in the yard. At the same time, check your soil pH, and the best way to do that is to either call us. And we can do that for you. Or you can take a sample of it and send it to the State Extension office now we’ll measure the soil pH. And if you have soil pH that’s below six, ideally you want the pH range to be somewhere between six to seven. And if you’re below six, then you really need to get some lime down lime will correct pH the lower pH but it takes time to do so you can’t do it right before you seed because you’re not going to get the results you’re not going to bring it up you’re here the pH and the soil in time to get the benefit to fall seed so it can take up to a year. But if you get it down in the lime down in the springtime, you’ll actually see some benefits from that lime bringing your soil back into the correct range. So if you need any help with that, feel free to give us a call. And if there’s anything else we can do for you, we’d love to hear from you as well. Thanks so much.
